Several days later…

Could I really do this?

I fingered the cards in the sleeve of my anti-magic jacket and exhaled slowly.

If things got tough, all I’d have was my cards to help me through, and it wasn’t like I could reliably use them. I’d channeled the power of the Magician once, and I had summoned the Chariot, but what about the other cards?

What about Death? What about the Tower?

The idea that I could whip out a card and it would be nothing but a card made me sick with nerves.

I checked the time on my watch, and my stomach leaped. We’d agreed to leave before curfew. The group had gone ahead of me, heading in different directions to throw anyone watching off our scent.

Over the past couple of days, we’d spent our evenings together, training, planning, talking. They had agreed to risk it all for my mission.

Now, it was my turn.

I stepped out onto the front porch alone. The evening was quiet, though curfew wasn’t yet in place. We had to make this quick and effective.

The pressure of watching eyes reached me from the darkened alleyways across the street. The French Quarter was usually alive with activity at night, but the quiet was oppressive this evening.

Was the Extreme here? God, I hoped so. We needed him if the plan was going to work.

I darted down the sidewalk and around the corner, breathing hard out of sheer nerves.

Moonlight gleamed in the inky sky, clouds drifting across the night sky, and the scent of the French Quarter in my nostrils. Humidity embraced me, settling against my skin. Fall was on the way, and it would bring a change in weather but little else.

I strode down the streets, not bothering to hide my presence, passing old Count Jack’s house and a few bars along the way. There were humans partying here or there, and the sound of New Orleans jazz drifted on the street, the tension from earlier gone.

I turned corners, following the predetermined route we’d set out the night before as a group.

I continued, moving toward darker streets where the sound was muted.

The target was the St. Louis Cemetery. It was fenced off, and entry was strictly forbidden except to family members of the deceased and tourists in tour groups.

That was exactly why it was the ideal place for us to do this—nobody would be here at this time of the night.

I walked St. Louis Street, moving in the darkness beside the crumbling brick wall of the cemetery. The barrier looked more like it was meant to keep things in than people out.

A quick scan of the perimeter showed me that the area was clear of passers-by. A couple of empty cars were parked at the far end of the street.

I glanced up at the clouds drifting over the moon and counted upward in my mind, because it helped me calm down as I put the plan into action.

One. Two. Three. I grasped the edge of the crumbling wall and heaved myself up. Four.
